Dwayne would have been proud. He always hated it when people tried to pull a fast one on me. He used to say that I had a spine of steel hidden under all that lace and yarn.

I suppose he was right.

The house is quiet now, but it’s a good quiet. The auction man will be here in an hour. He’ll treat the quilt with the respect it deserves. He’ll make sure it goes to someone who understands what it means to piece a life together, one scrap at a time.

I sat down in the chair by the window. I looked at my hands. They were trembling, just a little.

I realized then that I hadn’t cried once. Not when Dwayne passed, and not during this sale. I had been too busy holding everything together.

But as I sat there, the light hit the quilt on the bed. It glowed with all those years of history.

I finally let myself go. I didn’t sob. I just let the tears fall, one by one. They weren’t tears of grief. They were tears of release.

I knew then that I was going to be fine. I had my strength back.

I reached out and touched the fabric. It felt warm. It felt like home.

I have a lot of work left to do before the house sells next month. There are trunks to clear and memories to pack. But I’m not scared of the work anymore.

I’m ready for whatever comes next.

The dealer never knew what he was looking at. He thought he was buying a piece of cloth. He didn’t know he was trying to buy a piece of my soul.

He couldn’t afford it. Nobody could.

I’ll keep that lesson with me for the rest of my days. Never let them think they can take what’s yours just because you’re standing alone.

Sometimes, standing alone is exactly when you’re at your strongest.

The sun started to set, casting long, golden shadows across the floorboards. I stood up and smoothed out my skirt.

I walked into the kitchen to put the kettle on. I think I’ll make a cup of tea and wait for the auction man.

Everything is going to be alright.

I finally understood why Grandma used to say that the only thing worth keeping is the thing you’re willing to fight for.

I fought for it today.

And for the first time in a very long time, I won.
