Then I realized he wasn’t kidding.
“You seriously thought I’d hand over my property at your wedding?”
His expression hardened instantly.
“You promised Emily something meaningful.”
“I gave her life,” I replied.
That’s when he slapped me.
Hard.
The room went silent so fast it almost sounded unnatural. My vision blurred for a second and I stumbled sideways into the gift table. I still remember hearing glass rattle from the impact.
And what shocked me most wasn’t Carter.
It was Emily.
She looked terrified… but not surprised.
That was the moment my heart truly broke.
Not because my daughter failed to defend me.
Because deep down, I realized she knew this confrontation was coming.
Maybe not the slap.
But the pressure. The humiliation. The public demand.
She knew.
Vanessa immediately stepped in like she was calming down children.
“Helen, don’t make a scene.”
A scene.
I touched the corner of my mouth and saw blood on my fingertips.
And suddenly something inside me became very, very calm.
Like standing in the center of a storm after the panic disappears.
Carter extended his hand again.
“The keys.”
I looked directly into his eyes.
“No,” I said quietly.
He leaned closer. “You really want to do this here?”
That’s when I answered the only way I could.
“Greed leaves evidence.”
For the first time all evening, he looked nervous.
Vanessa noticed immediately. “What does that mean?”
I ignored her.
Instead, I reached into my purse and pulled out my phone.
Months earlier, after Carter became strangely aggressive about the property, Thomas’s older brother Robert convinced me to document everything. Robert had spent thirty years working financial crimes investigations for the state before retiring.
“People get sloppy when money is involved,” he told me.
Turns out he was right.
Carter had been using Emily’s name to negotiate with developers before the land even legally belonged to them. Worse, several contracts contained forged preliminary authorization documents tied to my property.
