His face went flat. The smile vanished. He stepped closer, crowding into my space. “You don’t want to do this,” he whispered. “Think about your daughter.”

I thought about Sarah. I thought about the way she looked at me when I told her I would pay for the wedding. She had been so happy. I felt a knife twist in my gut. But then I looked through the window and saw Brynn sitting on my sofa, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

“I’m done thinking,” I said. “Get off my property.”

He left, but he didn’t go far. He parked his truck down the street and sat there for hours. I watched him from the kitchen window. I felt like a stranger in my own life. I had spent so many years trying to be the perfect grandmother, the perfect mother, the one who held everything together. But the truth is, I had just been holding it all for show.

I finally got the call from my lawyer at 4:52 that afternoon. He said the authorities had been alerted. He said they were going to the house. I hung up the phone and walked over to where Brynn was playing.

“You’re safe now,” I told her.

She looked up at me and for the first time, she smiled. It was a small, fragile thing, but it was real. I sat down on the floor next to her.

I realized then that I had lost my daughter. Sarah would never forgive me for this. She would see me as the one who tore her life apart. And maybe she was right. I was the one who paid for the wedding. I was the one who brought him into our lives.

But as I watched Brynn start to take her toys back out of her bag, one by one, I knew I would do it all again. I would pay the $14,000 every single day if it meant I could keep her safe. I sat there on the rug and I cried, not for the money, or for the wedding, or for the life I thought I had, but for the little girl who finally had a place to put her toys. I knew I had burned my world to the ground to save her. I didn’t know how I was going to live in the ashes. But for tonight, that was enough.
