I followed her into a living room that was a cruel museum of the life I thought Michael was building with me. There were family portraits on the mantelpiece—Michael laughing on a beach, Michael holding a newborn baby, Michael standing proudly next to Sarah at a graduation ceremony. The dates on the photos spanned across the entire three years he had been spending his weekends at my apartment. He had told me his frequent travel was for high-stakes corporate consulting. In reality, he was just driving 14 miles down the highway to his real life.

We sat across from each other at her kitchen table, the Amazon package sitting between us like a ticking bomb. Over the next hour, the elaborate web of lies Michael had spun completely unraveled. Sarah explained that Michael’s “business trips” usually occurred on the weekends, which perfectly matched the days he spent with me, claiming he needed to escape the memory of his “late wife” in his old house. He had used a separate bank account, a second phone, and an entire alternate persona to keep us completely isolated from one another. But his fatal mistake was laziness; he had used his business account to purchase my engagement ring, accidentally linking our addresses in his online shopping profiles.

As the shock began to morph into a cold, hard rage, Sarah looked up at the kitchen clock. “He’s due home from his ‘conference’ in twenty minutes,” she said, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm register. “Do you want to stay?”

“I’m not going anywhere,” I replied.

When the front door clicked open twenty minutes later, Michael walked in carrying a duffel bag, humming a light tune. He called out, “Hey honey, I’m home early!” as he walked into the kitchen. He stopped dead in his tracks the moment his eyes landed on me sitting next to his wife.

The color drained from his face so fast I thought he might faint. He looked at me, then at Sarah, his eyes darting wildly like a trapped animal. For a few seconds, he tried to play it off. “What’s going on here? Who is this?” he stammered, projecting a fake confusion.

Sarah didn’t say a word. She simply stood up, walked over to him, and slapped him across the face with enough force to echo through the entire house. Then, she reached into her pocket, pulled out her engagement ring, and dropped it into his duffel bag. I stood up, walked over, and dropped mine right next to it.

We didn’t yell at him, and we didn’t give him the satisfaction of seeing us beg for explanations. Sarah told him he had exactly one hour to pack a single suitcase and leave, or she would call the police and file for an emergency restraining order. I watched the man who had cried tears over a fake tragedy crumble into a pathetic, stuttering mess on his own kitchen floor.
