I didn’t scream. I didn’t cry. I just turned around and walked back to my car. I drove home in the dark. I didn’t go back into that house. I went to my sister’s place and slept on her sofa.

It has been six months now. The house is sold. I kept the cat and my mother’s china. Sometimes, when the house is quiet, I think about the life I thought I had. It was a beautiful lie, I guess. But even lies can give you a home for a while.

I’m moving into a small place near the coast next week. It’s just one bedroom, but the windows face the ocean. I’ve started taking my health seriously. I’m doing the treatment. It’s hard, and some days I’m just so tired I can’t move, but the doctors say I’m going to be okay.

I think I’m going to be alright. I have my own life now. It’s not the one I planned, but it’s mine.

And for the first time in 34 years, I know exactly who is in it.
