I know it won’t ring. I know she is going to need time to figure out what she wants to do, and I know that whatever she decides, it is going to be the hardest thing she has ever done. I am sitting here in the dark now, and I am wondering if I did the right thing.

I had to tell her. I had to let her know the truth before she found out some other way, or before she had to make medical decisions based on lies. But now that it is done, I don’t feel any better. I feel like I just set a fire in my own house and walked out the door.

My husband just walked into the kitchen. He is looking at me like he can tell something is wrong, but he is too polite to ask. He thinks I am just tired.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

I looked at him, and I almost told him. I almost said, “You have been raising a girl who isn’t yours for thirty-two years because I was afraid to be alone.” But I didn’t. I just nodded and told him I was fine.

I am going to bed now. I don’t know if I will ever talk to my daughter again, and I don’t know if my husband will still be here when he finds out. I am living in the space between the lie and the end, and honestly, I don’t think there is a way back from this.
