They knocked heavily, demanding entry, but received no response. Hearing a faint muffled cry from within, the officers didn’t hesitate; they kicked the front door open and drew their weapons, bracing themselves for a violent confrontation with a monster.

But what they uncovered when they finally swept the house wasn’t at all what any of us expected. The truth was twisted in a way that left the entire neighborhood in absolute shock, turning a potential criminal horror story into a bizarre, terrifying freak accident.

As the officers cleared the hallway and entered the master bedroom, they found the eight-year-old girl huddled in the corner of a walk-in closet, clutching her arm and crying hysterically. Standing in the center of the room, completely pale and frozen in terror, was her father. He wasn’t hurting her. In fact, he looked just as helpless and horrified as his daughter.

Coiled tightly around the father’s torso and extending down to the floor was an enormous, twelve-foot exotic albino Burmese python. The massive reptile was an illegal pet the father had been secretly keeping in a heavily reinforced enclosure in the basement—a secret he had strictly warned his daughter never to tell anyone about, fearing he would face massive fines or jail time.

The emergency had unfolded less than twenty minutes prior. The father had been feeding the massive snake when it unexpectedly turned aggressive, striking and wrapping its powerful, suffocating coils entirely around his chest and arms. Desperate and losing oxygen rapidly, he had screamed for his daughter to help him.

The brave little girl had rushed into the room and tried with all her might to pull the crushing coils off her dad. But in the frantic struggle, the python had lashed out, sinking its sharp, rear-facing teeth deep into the little girl’s forearm before tightening its grip back onto her father.

Terrified, bleeding from the painful bite, and watching her father literally turn blue as the snake crushed the air from his lungs, the little girl had grabbed her dad’s cell phone from the nightstand and hid in the closet to call for help. In her pure, childlike panic, her explanation to me over the phone had been a literal description of the physical pain from the bite and the sheer, overwhelming size of the creature destroying her family.

Animal control and emergency medical services rushed into the home shortly after the police secured the perimeter. It took three grown men using specialized handling equipment and chemical relaxants to safely uncoil the massive python from the father’s crushed rib cage.

Both father and daughter were rushed to the Austin emergency room. The little girl received immediate treatment for the severe lacerations on her arm, along with a heavy course of antibiotics, while her father was treated for three broken ribs and severe bruising from the constriction.
