The bank manager gasped loudly, clutching his expensive pen in absolute panic. He looked from me to Caroline in sheer terror. “You drugged your own sister?!”
“I also gave the original tampered pills and the private lab report to Detective Miller an hour ago,” I said calmly, pointing toward the bank lobby. “He is currently standing right outside the glass doors with two armed police officers.”
Caroline’s hands started to shake so violently she dropped her incredibly expensive designer purse. It slapped loudly against the hardwood floor, spilling her lipstick and keys. She looked toward the glass walls of the office. The police were already walking toward the door.
I looked down at her terrified, pale face.
“You are right, Caroline,” I whispered. “I was heavily losing my mind. But I found it just in time to send you to federal prison for medical tampering.”
Caroline was arrested right in the bank lobby. She did not even fight back. The color was entirely drained from her face as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around her wrists. Bank customers watched in absolute silence as she was escorted to the cruiser.
She was convicted of felony fraud and poisoning. The judge showed zero leniency. She was sentenced to 7 years in federal prison.
I fired her lawyer. I canceled the power of attorney. I went back to my beautiful suburban house.
The next morning, I stood in my kitchen. The morning sunlight was streaming through the windows. The fog was completely gone. I picked up my actual thyroid medication, poured a glass of cold water, and took my pill. Then I walked out to my garden, absolutely alone, and perfectly free.
