Then the phone at the station started ringing.

The first parent called two days after my mugshot aired. Then another. Six of them, total. Six families who saw my face on the news, recognized the daycare, and finally said the thing they’d been too scared or too unsure to say.

Bruises. A kid who stopped sleeping. A little girl who used to sing and didn’t anymore. My ugly, embarrassing arrest was the only reason any of them knew they weren’t alone.

A detective named Reyes came to see me. He sat across my kitchen table and he didn’t talk to me like I was unstable. He talked to me like I was a witness. He said they’d reopened everything. Then he told me what they’d found once they actually started pulling files instead of closing them. Evidence involving seven children. Over four years. Seven. Four years. I had to put my coffee down because my hands weren’t working right.

“You filed three times,” Reyes said. He had this look on his face I can’t describe. “Three times.” He didn’t finish the sentence. He didn’t have to.

The charges against me got dropped. That part is over. But the charges being filed now aren’t against me at all. They’re against the worker. And they’re against the state inspector. The same name from the bottom of my letters, the one who reviewed my reports and signed them closed, the one who, it turns out, had a reason to keep that place open and complaints buried.

It’s been fourteen months. Eli still hasn’t spoken. He’s getting help, the good kind now, the kind I had to fight a different system to get. He hugs me. He laughs sometimes, this silent shaking laugh, and it’s the best sound that makes no sound. The doctors say maybe. They always say maybe.

Last night I laid out his shoes by the door like I do every morning, the little blue ones with the dinosaurs. I caught myself talking to him about our day, asking him questions, leaving the gaps where his answers used to go. I do that now. I leave the gaps. Just in case one day he fills one back in.
