I just hung up and blocked both of their numbers. Later that evening, I logged onto Facebook. I found my brother’s post—the one with the 47 likes—and I left a single comment. I uploaded a screenshot of the $57,600 annual bill from Sunrise, right next to a screenshot of his text from two years ago refusing to help, and a picture of my empty retirement account statement.
“Mom’s care is fully covered,” I wrote. “Enjoy your Olive Garden.” Then I deactivated my account, made myself a bowl of ramen, and slept peacefully for the first time in two years.
