And you can keep your parents’ house.” I turned around and walked out of the dining room.

I didn’t look back as I walked down the long, absurdly opulent hallway, out the front door, and into the cool night air. I climbed into my modest, reliable car, gripped the steering wheel, and let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for my entire life.

My engagement was over. My future was completely upended. But as I drove away from the estate and headed back to my small apartment, I didn’t feel devastated. I felt light. I thought about my parents, their calloused hands, and their beautiful, simple dream. I was going to move into my new house next week.
