Mark instinctively took a step backward toward the SUV, but the driver had already pulled away. “Mark Davies?” the first trooper said, his hand resting on his utility belt as he descended the stairs. “You are under arrest for reckless endangerment, felony abandonment, and attempted manslaughter.” Watching the feed, I saw Mark fall to his knees in the snow, sobbing and begging, claiming it was all a misunderstanding.

Eleanor was screaming, demanding to call her lawyer, but the troopers simply handcuffed them both, reading them their rights as their luxury suitcases sank into the slush.

They thought they could lock me away and leave me for dead. They thought I was weak. But the woman they locked in that cabin died on that freezing floor, and the mother who walked out is someone they will spend the rest of their very long prison sentences fearing.
