My tablet chimed with a motion alert. I watched in crystal-clear high definition as a parade of four packed minivans and two SUVs pulled up to my closed driveway gate. People started spilling out of the vehicles, stretching their legs.
Kids were already screaming, running around the gravel. Marissa stepped out of the lead car, looking incredibly smug, and marched up to the pedestrian gate.
That’s when she saw it.
Zip-tied directly to the center of the heavy iron gate was the bright, laminated sign I had made. The camera’s microphone was perfectly positioned to catch every word as she read it out loud.

I watched as the color completely drained from Marissa’s face. Greg walked up behind her, reading the sign over her shoulder.
“Marissa,” Greg’s voice carried clearly through the microphone. “What is this? I thought you said your sister was gifting us the house for the trip?”
“She… she is!” Marissa stammered, pulling out her phone with shaking hands. “She must be playing some kind of sick joke. Let me call her.”
My phone immediately started ringing. I let it go to voicemail. She called again. And again. By the fourth call, I finally answered, putting her on speakerphone while I lounged in my plush spa robe.
“What the hell is on your gate?!” she screamed, completely abandoning her usual composed persona. “Open the gate right now! We have twenty-two people out here, the kids are hot, and Greg’s parents need to sit down!”
“Hi Marissa,” I said calmly. “Did you scan the QR code? The payment portal is very user-friendly.”
“Payment portal?!” she shrieked. “Are you insane? You’re charging us? I told them this was a free family vacation! I told them you wanted to host us!”
“You told me you wanted a resort experience,” I replied smoothly. “And resorts cost money. I just bought this house, Marissa. I’m not a charity, and I’m certainly not your unpaid staff. You have two choices: pay the rental fee, or find twenty-two hotel rooms on a Friday afternoon in the middle of peak tourist season.”
“You can’t do this to me!” she sobbed, the panic finally setting in. “I look like an idiot! Greg’s family is staring at me!”
“You did this to yourself,” I corrected her. “You invited two dozen people to a house you don’t own without asking permission. Have a great vacation, wherever you end up spending it.”
