Thankfully, they didn’t find any internal injuries or broken bones, but the doctor at the hospital later told us that we found it just in time. If Lily had gone back to that house, the outcome could have been fatal.
Mark didn’t get far.
The police pulled him over on the highway less than an hour later. He tried to deny everything, claiming Jennifer was a clumsy mother, but the finger marks on Lily’s body were undeniable. Between the pediatric forensics and Jennifer finally finding the courage to testify about the abuse she had been suffering behind closed doors, Mark was arrested and held without bail.
It has been six months since that Saturday morning. Jennifer and Lily live with us now. It’s crowded, and our quiet weekends are a thing of the past, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Jennifer is going to therapy, healing from the trauma, and slowly finding herself again.
And little Lily? She is safe, happy, and thriving. She smiles all the time, and her favorite person in the entire world is her big cousin Sophia. Sophia still insists on helping with every single diaper change, incredibly proud of her important job. And every time I watch them together, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for my daughter’s bright, proud little voice that morning. Her innocence ended up saving two lives.
