Meanwhile, my parents’ definition of “living comfortably” seemed to evolve. When we visited them for Thanksgiving, I noticed a brand new espresso machine on their counter that cost more than my monthly car payment. My mom casually mentioned getting premium cable packages, and my dad talked about upgrading his golf clubs.

I swallowed the lump of resentment in my throat. I told myself they deserved a peaceful retirement. I told myself I was doing the right thing. I shoved my own financial anxiety down and kept letting the automatic transfers drain our account every single Friday.

Then came Lily’s seventh birthday.
We couldn’t afford a massive party at a trampoline park or an arcade like her classmates had. Instead, Mark and I spent weeks saving a little extra cash to throw her a beautiful backyard party. We bought a grocery store sheet cake, hung up streamers, and invited a few of her friends from school. Lily was most excited about seeing her grandparents. She had drawn them a picture and kept running to the front window every time a car drove past our house.

The party started at 2:00 PM. By 3:30 PM, the kids had played games, eaten pizza, and it was time for cake. Lily kept looking at the door. “Can we wait for Grandma and Grandpa before we sing?” she asked, her big brown eyes looking up at me pleadingly. I told her they were probably just running late and texted my mom. No response.

By 4:30 PM, the other kids were going home. Lily sat by the living room window for two straight hours waiting for them to pull into the driveway. They never showed up. My heart broke watching her little shoulders slump as she finally realized they weren’t coming. I was absolutely furious. I walked into the kitchen, locked the door behind me, and called my dad’s cell phone.

He answered on the third ring. I could hear the television blaring a baseball game in the background.
“Dad? Where are you guys?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. “Lily has been waiting by the window all afternoon. It’s her birthday.”
