I waited until Arthur went to bed that night. He slept deeply, snoring softly beside me. I crept down to the kitchen, took my favorite mug from the cabinet, and wrapped it in a plastic grocery bag. I hid it in the trunk of my car.

The next morning, I drove to a private testing facility in Akron. It cost me $380 in cash, money I had to secretly withdraw from my personal savings account.

Three days later, they emailed me the report.

Positive for alprazolam. The concentration in the dried coffee residue at the bottom of the mug was massive.

I sat in my Buick in the parking lot of the Akron lab for an hour. My hands were shaking so hard I could barely hold the steering wheel. I kept staring at the PDF on my phone.

I called the Canton police department from my car.

Two hours later, Detective Miller was sitting in my living room. He was a quiet man with tired eyes, but he listened to every word.

“Mrs. Collins,” he said, “we need to test the kitchen.”

They waited until Arthur was at his accounting office. Two officers came in with testing kits. They found the white powder mixed into the powdered hazelnut creamer. They found it in the sugar jar.

They found a prescription bottle hidden in the back of Arthur’s nightstand drawer. The label was made out to Thomas Collins, Arthur’s brother who had died in a car accident in West Virginia three years ago. The prescribing doctor was located in Kentucky.

Arthur had been driving across state lines to fill a dead man’s prescriptions.

“Based on the dosage and the duration,” Detective Miller told me, his face grim, “your husband is being charged with felonious assault and domestic poisoning.”

They set a trap. I went back to bed and pretended to sleep.

The next morning, Arthur walked in with my cobalt blue mug. He placed it on my nightstand with his usual calm, gentle smile.

“Here you go, sweetheart,” he said, patting my hand. “Drink up. It’s going to be a beautiful day.”

I looked at the coffee. I looked at him. My pulse was drumming in my ears.
