I thanked her, set the heavy ceramic pot exactly where she suggested, and watched her drive away, completely ignoring the hollow feeling her warning had left in my chest.
That was my first mistake. For the next two days, the apartment felt unusually quiet, but the peace lily sat beautifully by the window, its lush green leaves absorbing the afternoon sun.
I tried to shake off Clara’s ominous parting words, telling myself I was being paranoid.
But on the third afternoon, the illusion of safety shattered completely. I was sitting on my living room couch, reading a book, when the sudden, sharp sound of metal against metal echoed through the quiet space.
The heavy deadbolt on my front door clicked. Before I could even stand up or process what was happening, the door swung open with a violent thud, slamming against the interior wall.
Mr. Vance burst into my apartment.
He didn’t knock, he didn’t call out a greeting, and he didn’t apologize for the illegal intrusion. His appearance was completely unhinged; his hair was uncombed, his shirt was wrinkled, and his eyes were wide, bloodshot, and locked entirely on Clara’s peace lily. He looked like a man possessed, breathing heavily as he ignored my presence completely.
“Mr. Vance! What are you doing? Get out of my apartment!” I screamed, my voice cracking with a mixture of terror and outrage as I scrambled backward on the couch.
He didn’t say a single word. Ignoring my shouts, he rushed across the room with terrifying speed, bypassed me entirely, and grabbed the heavy ceramic pot by the window.
With a brutal, sweeping motion, he violently dumped the contents directly onto my living room floor. The peace lily fell sideways, its white blooms crushing against the floorboards as a massive mound of dark, rich soil scattered across the hardwood.
Mr. Vance dropped to his knees, completely ignoring the dirt ruining his trousers.
He began frantically, violently digging through the dark soil with his bare fingernails, tearing at the roots of the plant as if his very life depended on finding whatever was hidden inside.
