“What did you do?!” my mother shrieked, ignoring the people staring at her in the terminal. “The lady at the desk says our names aren’t on the manifest! She says the booking number is completely invalid!
Fix this right now! Call them and get us on this ship!”
I took a slow, deliberate sip of my coffee, matching the exact composure she had shown in my living room two days prior.
“I didn’t do anything to your vacation, Mom,” I said calmly. “Because you never had a vacation. You stole a gift meant for your aging parents. Did you really think I was going to let you sail across the Mediterranean on my hard-earned money while they sat at home?”
“You selfish little brat!” she screamed, her voice cracking. “We spent thousands of dollars out of pocket on these last-minute flights to get here! We are stuck in Spain with nowhere to go! You ruined our lives!”
“No,” I replied. “You ruined your own trip the moment you decided your entitlement was worth more than your parents’ happiness. Enjoy Barcelona. I hear the hotels are beautiful this time of year—if you can afford them.”
I hung up the phone.
An hour later, I drove over to my grandparents’ house. I walked into their living room, sat them down, and handed them a brand-new folder. Inside were first-class tickets to Dublin, reservations for a historic castle stay, and a private chauffeur service to take them anywhere they wanted to go. My grandmother burst into tears, and my grandfather gave me a hug so tight my ribs ached. They leave next week, and they have no idea about the drama that transpired to get them there.
As for my mother and sister? They had to spend a fortune booking a flight back home the next day.
They are currently telling the entire extended family that I “stranded them in a foreign country” and stole their money. Half my aunts and uncles are furious with me, but the cousin who knows the truth thinks it’s the greatest act of malicious compliance in family history.
My grandparents are going to Ireland, my money is safe, and my mother learned that some things can’t be stolen without a price. I have absolutely no regrets.
