Finally, the surgeon came out and told me they had caught it just in time. She was out of surgery and resting in a recovery room. The relief that washed over me was so intense I felt dizzy.

I went into her room, sat by her bedside, and held her small, pale hand, watching her breathe.
That’s exactly when the door swung open, and Mark strolled in.
He didn’t look like a father who had just discovered his daughter was in emergency surgery. He looked completely unbothered, carrying a premium coffee from the cafe downstairs. When he saw me, he didn’t ask how she was doing or thank me for saving her life. Instead, he snapped, “Why didn’t you text me? I have things to do today.”
Before I could even process the sheer audacity of his comment, Lily’s eyes fluttered open. The anesthesia was wearing off, and she was still incredibly groggy. She looked past me, saw Mark standing at the foot of her bed, and her face lit up. She weakly reached her hand out toward him.
“Daddy…” she whispered, her voice incredibly raw. “Thank you for being here. Thank you for taking care of me.”

My heart shattered into a million pieces right there. I was the one who had stayed up with her. I was the one who had carried her through the ER doors. I was the one who had been crying and praying for three hours straight. But to Lily, in her confused state, her dad was the savior who had magically appeared.
I waited for Mark to do the decent thing. I waited for him to say, “Your stepmom is the one who took care of you, sweetie.” Instead, he smirked at me—a cold, triumphant sneer that made my skin crawl.

He walked past me, squeezed her hand, and said, “Of course, sweetheart. I’m your REAL dad. I’ll always be the one who actually matters.”
The room fell dead silent. The nurse adjusting Lily’s IV looked incredibly uncomfortable and quickly excused herself. The sheer disrespect, the utter cruelty of erasing ten years of maternal love and devotion in a single sentence, completely suffocated me. I felt a lump form in my throat, and hot tears threatened to spill over. I knew that if I stayed and fought him, it would cause a scene in front of a recovering child. I couldn’t do that to Lily.
