It was a photo of me sitting on their couch holding both twins. I actually smiled at first because I remembered that moment. One baby had fallen asleep against my shoulder while the other was staring up at me with those big curious eyes.
Then I read the caption.
“Here’s our built-in FREE babysitter 😂”
At first I just blinked at the screen.
I kept rereading it like maybe I misunderstood. But then I looked at the comments.
Hundreds of laughing reactions.
People joking that grandparents were “the best unpaid employees.” Others saying things like, “That’s why you have kids young!” and “She can never say no now.”
One comment said, “You hit the jackpot with this grandma.”
Another said, “Free childcare in this economy is priceless.”
My chest started tightening the more I read.
Maybe some people would think I’m overreacting. Maybe they’d say it was harmless. But after a year of sacrificing my time, my energy, and honestly parts of my health to help them, seeing myself described as a “free babysitter” in front of everyone felt humiliating.
Not “loving grandma.”
Not “our lifesaver.”
Not “family.”
Just free labor.
What hurt most was how casually she posted it. Like everything I’d done was expected instead of appreciated.
I quietly locked my phone and went back to work, but I couldn’t focus for the rest of the day. Every time I tried, that caption replayed in my head.
By the time I got home, I still hadn’t replied to the post. I didn’t want drama online. I figured maybe I’d talk to my son privately later.
But before I could decide what to say, my phone rang.
It was him.
The second I answered, I could tell something was wrong. His voice sounded tense.
“Mom… are you upset?”
I paused before answering. “What do you think?”
There was silence for a moment.
Then he sighed heavily and said, “She didn’t mean it like that.”
I told him maybe she didn’t, but that didn’t change how humiliating it felt to see strangers laughing at me after everything I’d done for them.
He apologized quietly and admitted he’d told her to delete the post after noticing some of the comments were getting disrespectful.
