“I sent the pictures like my mom told me to. Please don’t make me go back to Dr. Keller’s office.”
My hands shook. I pulled out my phone, started recording the audio, and silently dialed 911, keeping the line active in my pocket.
Then, I kicked the closet door open.
Dr. Keller, the wealthy owner of the dental clinic where my wife worked, was standing near the bed. He wore an expensive grey suit, and his face was completely calm. He didn’t even flinch when I burst into the room.
Lily was curled in a corner of the floor, clutching her knees.
“It’s just business, Torres,” Keller said, his lip curling into a smirk. “Don’t make a scene. Your wife is the one who set this up.”
Just then, Maria walked in, carrying a brand-new designer bag. She looked at me, then at Keller, and told me to let it go.
I demanded to know what they were doing to my daughter.
Maria didn’t apologize. She stood by the dresser, looking at me like I was a child.
She explained that she and Keller had been staging dental malpractice and personal injury claims.
They had been faking patient records for 6 months.
Maria would take photos of Lily’s teeth, using dental molds faked by Keller to simulate severe dental damage.
They had already filed 2 successful claims, netting 80,000 dollars that sat in a secret bank account in Maria’s name.
But the peak of the nightmare was the next claim. They were planning a massive 150,000 dollar injury case.
To prove the injury, Keller was going to perform unnecessary, painful dental extractions and surgeries on Lily at his clinic.
Lily was screaming every afternoon because they were threatening her, telling her that if she didn’t cooperate, we would lose the house and I would go to jail for our construction debts.
Maria told me I was being naive. She said my construction salary would never pay off our debts, and that she did what she had to do to secure our future.
“We did what was necessary,” Keller added, straightening his tie.
But they didn’t know about the phone in my pocket.
A minute later, the front door was kicked open.
Three police officers and an insurance fraud investigator flooded the hallway. The blue and red lights from the patrol cars flashed through our bedroom window.
